Here in Old Town Alexandria, an especially endearing community thrives – the local four-foots who bring an extra dose of fun to this already exciting town. The Dogs of Old Town Alexandria are more than just pets; they are active members of the community, adding a lively and heartwarming charm of their own to the daily life of Old Town.

Dog Parks in Old Town Alexandria

With its many parks and green spaces, Old Town Alexandria provides a perfect playground for our furry four footed friends. From the riverfront parks offering scenic views to the cozy, tree-lined streets, dogs and their owners can be spotted enjoying leisurely walks, spirited games of fetch, and sunny afternoons lounging on the grass. Alexandria even publishes a guide to Dog Parks in Alexandria.

Dog-Friendly Old Town

If you’ve been out on the streets of Old Town, you’ve probably noticed that the area is not only human-friendly but Old Town also rolls out the welcome mat for our canine companions. Water bowls outside shops and in outdoor dining areas is a common sight, and (well-behaved) dogs are welcome in many shops.

Dog Shops A-Bound

Speaking of shops, The Dog Park is an Old Town establishment at 708 King Street catering to our canine friends, and offers not only treats, toys and supplies, but now also offers grooming services. Stop in to The Dog Park with your furry friend and expect to get lots of pets and a fresh bowl of water for good boys and girls.

PetMedic Urgent Care

Coming in Spring of 2024 to the ground floor of 515 King Street, with an entrance on S. St. Asaph, we welcome our new neighbors, PetMedic Urgent Care of Alexandria!

PetMedic Urgent Care promises “high-quality and timely veterinary urgent care,” with “flexible scheduling and same-day online appointments,” for after-hours, on weekends, and even on some holidays for your pets’ emergent needs. Though they do not handle life-threatening conditions, a number of common reasons for veterinary visits are handled by their pet clinic, without a previous appointment or established relationship necessary.

A Good Boy Walking His Trainer in Old Town

Dog Watchers

One of our favorite lunch time activities in Old Town is catching the dog trainers from Old Towne School for Dogs working right outside our offices with their canine day care students on the 500 block of King Street. Doggy day care at OTSFD is unique and in demand. Dogs in the Old Towne School for Dogs day school spend the day socializing in the neighborhood. Walking down King Street and through the Market Square with their individual trainers, these canine students practice their training.

Paws in the Park

Each year in the fall, Alexandria hosts a paws-itively fabulous weekend for all kinds of pets. Paws in the Park in October is Alexandria’s biggest and free pet-focused event. This event features family-friendly entertainment and activities as well as merchants with merch for Spot and Mittens. Adoptions are a big focus of this weekend event, so bring your hearts and wallets! In fact, bring the whole family to Oronoco Park in October for this annual pet focused weekend in the park!

Dog Friendly Art Center

The Torpedo Factory Art Center at 105 S. Union St. at the end of King Street is dog-friendly! An enclosed art center with open artist studios and shops, food and drink in an air conditioned building. The building has restrooms for the people, and easy access to Potomac Waterfront park for doggos who need to go. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is a fantastic base of operations for a family fun day in Alexandria, well-behaved dogs welcome!
